A new species of Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio de Contas basin, Bahia, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Zanata,Angela Maria; Burger,Rafael; Vita,George; Camelier,Priscila.
ABSTRACT A new species of Astyanax from tributaries of the rio de Contas, Bahia, Brazil, is described. The new species differs from congeners by having three horizontal series of scales from lateral line to pelvic-fin origin and the distal margin of third infraorbital distinctly separated from vertical and horizontal limbs of preopercle, leaving a broad area not covered by superficial bones. The new species further differs from most congeners by the presence of bony hooks on all fins of mature males. Particularly from congeners occurring in rivers of the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion, it further differs by having the highest body depth just anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, 34-37 pored lateral line scales, a vertically elongated...

A new species of Copionodon representing a relictual occurrence of the Copionodontinae (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae), with a CT-scan imaging survey of key subfamilial features Neotropical Ichthyology
Pinna,Mario de; Abrahão,Vitor; Reis,Vinicius; Zanata,Angela.
ABSTRACT A new species of the Copionodontinae genus Copionodon is described from the riacho do Mosquito, tributary to rio Santo Antônio, rio Paraguaçu basin in the Diamantina Plateau, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. This species represents the northernmost occurrence of the subfamily yet known and is a relictual population, apparently restricted to an underground sector of the stream and its immediate downstream exit. The new species can be readily recognized by the combination of the presence of opercular odontodes, the mostly uniform coloration of the body, and the lack of a free orbital rim. Despite several troglomorphic traits shared between the new species and Glaphyropoma spinosum, the two species are not closest relatives and all such similarities...

García-Fuentes,Antonio; Torres-Cordero,Juan A.; Ruiz-Valenzuela,Luis; Lendínez-Barriga,María Lucía; Quesada-Rincón,Juan; Valle-Tendero,Francisco; Veloz,Alberto; León,Yolanda M.; Salazar-Mendías,Carlos.
This paper is a floristic and phytosociological study of the dry forest communities of the Dominican Republic. A total of 69 relevés in dry forest biotopes were carried out. The samples were subsequently subjected to Detrended Correspondence Analysis for the determination and study of possible groupings. The study does not cover tree formations growing on serpentines, nor the so-called semideciduous forests, peculiar to areas with higher rainfall. A total of nine phytocoenoses were identified. The most significant results led to the description of six new phytosociological associations: Simaroubetum berteroani(thorny dry forest on coastal dunes), Phyllostylo rhamnoidis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (southern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Consoleo...

An introduction to the flora of the Milne Bay Archipelago Naturalis
Johns, R.; Gideon, O.; Simaga, J.; Kuria, T.; Bagoera, G..
The term Milne Bay Archipelago is used to include Goodenough, Fergusson and Normanby Islands – collectively the d’Entrecasteau Islands, the islands of the Louisiade Archipelago, Missima, Rossel and Sudest Islands and the two northern islands, the Trobriands and Woodlark. All are very complex with many small islands, often unnamed. Due to their geographic isolation the islands have many endemic species. So far 139 have been described. Of particular interest is the genus Rosselia, collected only twice from Rossel Island. This monotypic genus was placed, with many questions, in the Burseraceae and its current position is uncertain. Another neoendemic genus in Milne Bay is Lamiodendendron. It is a coastal tree scattered on several islands and also coastally on...

Asellus (Asellus) monticola en Iran (Crustacea, Isopoda, Asellota, Asellidae) Naturalis
Henry, Jean-Paul; Magniez, Guy.
Asellus (Asellus) monticola monticola Birstein, 1932 has been found in a spring in the extreme NW of Iran. Amplifications of the original description of this valid species, which is clearly distinct from A. aquaticus, are given. Contrary to A. aquaticus, A. monticola appears to be strongly endemic and stenotopic; its settlement may have taken place prior to the expansion of A. aquaticus across Europe. Some reflections on the taxonomy and biogeography of the Asellidae of the Transcaucasian region are included.

Assessing population size of the Chestnut-Capped Foliage-Gleaner Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Faria,Luciene; Carrara,Lucas A.; Garcia,Frederico I.; Rodrigues,Marcos.
Chestnut-Capped Foliage-Gleaner (Hylocryptus rectirostris) is a Neotropical ovenbird species (Furnariidae) endemic to gallery forests of the Cerrado region of central Brazil. While it is not considered globally threatened, the degree of habitat loss occurring throughout much of its known distribution may warrant its inclusion on red lists beyond just the state of Sao Paulo. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the conservation status of Chestnut-Capped Foliage-Gleaner according to those criteria adopted by the IUCN. Results of censuses conducted in the Serra do Cipó National Park were used to estimate the entire population size of the Chestnut-Capped Foliage-Gleaner and refine our understanding of its actual geographic distribution. Census...

Biodiversity, Urban Areas, and Agriculture: Locating Priority Ecoregions for Conservation Ecology and Society
Ricketts, Taylor; World Wildlife Fund; taylor.ricketts@wwfus.org; Imhoff, Marc; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center; mimhoff@LTPmail.gsfc.nasa.gov.
Urbanization and agriculture are two of the most important threats to biodiversity worldwide. The intensities of these land-use phenomena, however, as well as levels of biodiversity itself, differ widely among regions. Thus, there is a need to develop a quick but rigorous method of identifying where high levels of human threats and biodiversity coincide. These areas are clear priorities for biodiversity conservation. In this study, we combine distribution data for eight major plant and animal taxa (comprising over 20,000 species) with remotely sensed measures of urban and agricultural land use to assess conservation priorities among 76 terrestrial ecoregions in North America. We combine the species data into overall indices of richness and endemism. We...

Biogeographic patterns of Chilean littoral fishes RChHN
OJEDA,F. PATRICIO; LABRA,FABIO A; MUÑOZ,ALEJANDRO A.
In this study, we analyzed the biogeographic patterns of the Chilean littoral fish fauna, including latitudinal trends in teleost and chondrichthyan fish species richness, their distribution range patterns, and their level of endemism, both to the Chilean coast and the Southeastern Pacific. We determined the number and percentage of fish taxa within four different groups based on their biogeographic affinities. This was done, both for teleost and chondrichthyan fishes, at the species, genus and family level. In order to recognise the existence of biogeographic regions, we applied cluster and ordination analyses to the distribution data, using objective bootstrapping techniques at the three taxonomic levels used. We found that littoral fish diversity...

Collection records of Gyldenstolpia planaltensis (Avila-Pires, 1972) (Rodentia, Cricetidae) suggest the local extinction of the species Mastozool. neotrop.
Bezerra,Alexandra M. R..
The genus Gyldenstolpia was recently described and includes two species, G. fronto and G. planaltensis, both very rare. Gyldenstolpia planaltensis had records in only two localities in the central-western Brazil and is endemic to the Cerrado biome. A new locality is added to G. planaltensis, extending its distribution, and was obtained from a specimen housed in a museum collection. Summarized data on the distribution, ecology and natural history of G. planaltensis denotes that this species can be already extinct or committed to extinction because of habitat conversion and habitat loss.

Comparative phylogeography of the western Indian Ocean reef fauna ArchiMer
Borsa, Philippe; Durand, Jean-dominique; Chen, Wei-jen; Hubert, Nicolas; Muths, Delphine; Mou-tham, Gerard; Kulbicki, Michel.
Assessing patterns of connectivity at the community and population levels is relevant to marine resource management and conservation. The present study reviews this issue with a focus on the western Indian Ocean (WIO) biogeographic province. This part of the Indian Ocean holds more species than expected from current models of global reef fish species richness. In this study, checklists of reef fish species were examined to determine levels of endemism in each of 10 biogeographic provinces of the Indian Ocean. Results showed that the number of endemic species was higher in the WIO than in any other region of the Indian Ocean. Endemic species from the WIO on the average had a larger body size than elsewhere in the tropical Indian Ocean. This suggests an...

Composition of the ichthyofauna in Brazilian semiarid reservoirs Biota Neotropica
Costa,Silvia Yasmin Lustosa; Barbosa,José Etham de Lucena; Viana,Leandro Gomes; Ramos,Telton Pedro Anselmo.
Abstract The scale of impact that the São Francisco River transposition project will have on the drainage basins ichthyofauna is still unclear, however, changes in the fish community diversity and abundance is probable. Surveys and registries of the fish fauna within key systems of the catchment basins are priority actions for the conservation of the aquatic diversity. This study conducted a taxonomic survey of the Epitácio Pessoa (Boqueirão municipality) and Argemiro de Figueiredo (Itatuba municipality), reservoirs ichthyofauna, both belonging to the Paraíba do Norte River basin, important socioeconomic and environmental systems for the transposition project. Monthly sampling was carried out between October/2014 to September/2015 in the upstream and...

Conservation of mayflies (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) in Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Massariol,Fabiana Criste; Soares,Elaine Della Giustina; Salles,Frederico Falcão.
Conservation of mayflies (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) in Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. Ephemeroptera exhibits great diversity among bodies of freshwater in the Atlantic Forest, a biome that is suffering from massive human impact. Within this context, the creation of conservation units using biological information is more recommended than economic, cultural, or political criteria. The distribution pattern of 76 Ephemeroptera species was analyzed using the biogeographical methods Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity and Network Analysis Method in order to infer relevant areas for conservation of the mayfly community in Espírito Santo. The results obtained from both analyses were largely congruent, and pointed out four relevant areas for conservation: two in...
